It covered what we call today Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel and also, parts of modern-day Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and Arabia. ![]() In its day, the Persian Empire was the largest the world had ever seen. At this time the city of Athens was in its classical glory and in Greece they were celebrating the 79 th Olympic games. In those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom: At this time (approximately 483 B.C.), Ahasuerus was planning for a doomed invasion of Greece, which would take place several years later. The fact of the existence of this king and these circumstances is extremely well attested archaeologists have discovered the ruins of the very palace where these events happened.ī. He inherited the vast Persian Empire from his father, Darius I (who is mentioned in passages such as Ezra 4:24, 5:5-7, 6:1-15 Daniel 6:1 and 6:25 Haggai 1:15 and 2:10). It came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus: This King Ahasuerus is well known to history, though more commonly under the name Xerxes. Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia), in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel,Ī. King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) holds a grand feast. Thus, the deeds of Queen Esther cast a ray of light forward into Israel’s history from a dark time. King Ahasuerus agreed and set a date for all Jews to be killed.Esther is the last of the historical books of the Bible, so its main character is named Esther – that is, Venus, the morning star, which sheds its light after all the other stars have ceased to shine, and while the sun still delays rising. Haman convinced King Xerxes to kill all Jews as they stood in opposition to the king's rule. When Haman found out about this and that Mordecai was a Jew, Haman became enraged with anger and wanted to kill not only just Mordecai but all of the Jewish nation. Mordecai then refused to bow down the Haman, the highest of all nobles. Mordecai told Queen Esther of the plan and Esther told the king, giving credit to Mordecai for overhearing the plan. ![]() One night when Mordecai was sitting by the king's gate, he overheard two guards named Bigthana and Teresh conspiring to assassinate King Xerxes. Esther continued to hide her Jewish background as Mordecai had instructed her to do because he knew it would be dangerous for her if anyone found out she was a Jew. King Ahasuerus held a great banquet for his new queen, Esther. When it was Esther's turn to go before the king, he immediately found her the most attractive and beautiful of all women and placed the royal crown on her head. Esther was careful however to not tell anyone her nationality, as Mordecai had warned her not to. ![]() Esther's beauty won her Hegai's favor and she was given special attention. A man named Hegai was put in charge of preparing the women for meeting the king. Esther's cousin Mordecai had taken Esther in and raised her as his own after Esther's parents had died. A Jewish woman named Esther was taken with other young women to a citadel. ![]()
